Fence Materials for a Straight Run

Fence kits are sold in panel widths, not in “enough for the side yard.” Measure the run along the ground, match the panel size you will actually buy, then count posts and concrete from that spacing. A straight, level run is the planning model — slopes and corners need extras on top.

Measure the run the fence will sit on

Pull a string line along the proposed fence line and measure corner to corner on the ground. Do not walk a slope with the tape floating through the air and call that the panel length — panels follow the ground or step with it, but your horizontal run length still drives how many bays you need.

Example: a 50 ft (15.2 m) side yard run with 8 ft panels. Fifty divided by eight is 6.25, so you need 7 panels if you cannot buy a custom filler — or 6 full panels plus a cut panel if your system allows. Mark gate openings and subtract their clear widths from the panelled length. A 4 ft gate in a 50 ft run leaves 46 ft of panels. Gates need their own posts — usually two — and hardware that is not in the panel kit.

Panels, rails, and what “one bay” includes

Panel systems arrive as prefab sections or as boards you assemble between posts. Either way, the bay width must match your post spacing. Buying 6 ft panels for posts set at 8 ft centres leaves gaps no calculator can paper over.

Picket fences are a different pattern: picket width plus spacing across the rail length. If you are building pickets, do not force the panel-width field to do picket math — use a picket-oriented takeoff or adjust the inputs carefully.

Privacy screens, shadowbox, and ranch rail each waste differently at ends and gates. Prefab panels usually need less cutting waste than site-built board fences, but corners and slopes still create offcuts.

Post count for a straight run

Rule of thumb: number of panels + 1 for a single straight run between two terminal posts, then add posts for gates and corners. Six panels in a line need seven line posts if both ends are terminal posts and there is no gate. Add two posts for a single gate opening (or follow the gate kit diagram).

Wood panel fencing often spaces posts every 6–8 ft (about 1.8–2.4 m). Metal panel systems may use different centres — follow the product. Corners need a dedicated post; do not ask one line post to turn 90 degrees without the right hardware.

End posts and gate posts often need larger section sizes or deeper footings than intermediate line posts. Count them as their own SKUs when the supplier prices them higher.

Post holes and concrete bags

Each post needs a hole below local frost depth in cold climates, or to the depth your code and manufacturer require. A common planning habit is roughly one-third of the post length in the ground for many wood fences — still verify locally.

Hole volume is roughly a cylinder: for a 12 in diameter hole 3 ft deep, volume is about 2.4 cu ft before you subtract the post. Multiply by post count. Worked sketch: 7 posts, each with about 2 cu ft of concrete net, is roughly 14 cu ft — around 0.5 yd³. That might be 25–30 eighty-pound bags depending on yield and waste. Dry-set gravel backfill is a different method some regions allow for certain posts; do not mix methods on the same run without a reason.

Gates, corners, and height

Gates are priced and counted separately. Hardware, drop rods, and latch posts matter as much as the gate leaf width. Leave hinge-side clearance in the opening measurement.

Corners and direction changes each need a post. A run that turns twice is not “one straight run” in the calculator sense — split it into segments and add corner posts once per turn.

Fence height affects wind load and post size more than panel count. A 6 ft privacy fence on the same 50 ft line uses the same bay math as a 4 ft picket run only if panel widths match — the posts and concrete may not.

Slopes, steps, and when the simple model breaks

This planning model assumes a straight, reasonably level run. Stepped slopes need racked panels, stepped panels, or custom cuts. Budget an extra panel on long graded runs where cutoffs will not reuse cleanly.

Following grade with racked panels keeps a consistent top line relative to the ground; stepping keeps panels level but creates triangular gaps you fill or accept. Neither is free in materials or labour.

If the line snakes around trees or HVAC equipment, measure each straight segment. Summing three doglegs as one 50 ft tape reading will undercount posts.

Shopping list and budget check

List panels (or boards and rails), line posts, terminal/gate posts, caps, concrete, gravel for hole bases if used, and fasteners. Put material totals into the Cost Estimator with a contingency for underground surprises — old roots, rock, and buried debris show up once digging starts.

Panel systems map cleanly to panel width and run length. Picket fences need picket width and spacing math. Do not treat them as interchangeable inputs.

How deep should fence posts be?

Often about one-third of post length in the ground and below local frost depth where frost heave is an issue. Check code and the fence manufacturer; gate posts may need more.

How many posts for a 50 ft fence with 8 ft panels?

About 7 panels worth of bays after rounding, which is typically 8 posts for a straight run with no gate (panels + 1). Subtract panel length for a gate and add the gate posts.

Can I reuse old post holes?

Only if depth, diameter, and alignment still work and the old concrete can be removed or reused safely. Crooked old holes force crooked new posts.

Do I need gravel under the post concrete?

Many installs add a small stone base for drainage before concrete. Follow local practice for your soil and frost conditions.

What about metal post spikes instead of concrete?

Spikes and bolt-down shoes are product-specific. They change the concrete line item but not how you count panels. Confirm wind and height limits on the spike rating.
