Measure the deck footprint, not the yard
Use the finished length and width of the deck surface you will walk on. A common planning example is a 12×16 ft deck (about 3.7×4.9 m). That is 192 sq ft of surface before you worry about board width or gaps.
Irregular decks — L-shapes, wraparounds, or cutouts for trees — should be split into rectangles and added together. Measure what you will actually deck, not the whole patio zone or the ground under the stairs unless those areas get boards too.
If the deck sits against a house, confirm whether the ledger edge is included in your length. Double-counting that last inch shows up later as an extra course of boards you did not need.
Board width, gaps, and course count
Board face width plus the gap between boards sets how many courses you need across the short span. A 5.5 in nominal board with a 1/8 in gap is not the same coverage as a 5.5 in board with a 1/4 in gap. Composite products often specify a different expansion gap than pressure-treated timber — use the product sheet, not a generic timber rule.

Board length, joins, and waste
If stock boards are shorter than the run, you will join over joists and stagger the seams. That pattern creates more offcuts than a single full-length board per bay. A 16 ft run using 12 ft stock needs careful join planning and usually a higher waste allowance than a deck that fits stock lengths.
Picture-frame borders, diagonal lays, and herringbone-style patterns chew through boards faster than a straight lay parallel to the house. For a straight lay on a rectangular deck, 5–10% waste is a common planning band. Patterned or heavily notched decks often sit closer to 10–15%.
Buy from one dye lot when you can. Matching a stained or composite colour months later is harder than returning one unused board after the job. Keep a couple of extras for future repairs if the product line may change.
Worked example: 12×16 ft deck
Take a 12×16 ft deck, boards laid across the 12 ft width, 5.5 in face boards, 1/8 in gaps, and boards available in 16 ft lengths so most runs need no mid-span join. Run those numbers through the Decking Calculator rather than freehanding the division — the tool keeps the gap math consistent.
You will get a board count for the field. Add waste on top (say 8% for a clean rectangle with a few notches at posts). Then convert to pieces: if each board covers one full 16 ft run, board count roughly equals course count. If you use shorter stock, multiply courses by pieces per run and add join waste.
Fastener count is separate. Hidden-clip systems sell by the square foot or by box coverage. Face-screw layouts need screws per joist crossing. Do not bury fasteners inside the board line item if you want a quote you can compare.
What a board count never includes
Joists, beams, posts, hangers, ledger flashing, and blocking are framing — not decking. Span tables and ledger attachment follow local code and the manufacturer’s instructions, or an engineer’s design on taller or more complex builds. The calculator is a quantity helper, not a structural stamp.

Treating a board-only number as a full deck budget is the fastest way to under-order. Surface boards are often less than half the material story once framing, hardware, and finish enter the picture.
Timber vs composite shopping notes
Pressure-treated boards are usually cheaper up front and need more finish maintenance. Composite and PVC cost more per linear foot but change the gap rules, fastener system, and sometimes the joist spacing the brand requires. Always read the span chart for the exact product.
Some composites are sold as “grooved for clips” on both edges; others are solid-edge for picture frames. Mixing those without planning leaves you short on border boards. Order field boards and border boards as distinct lines when the SKU differs.
If you are comparing quotes, ask each supplier to state board size, gap assumption, waste percent, and whether stairs or rail are included. Two “board counts” that silently use different gaps are not the same order.
Budget the surface, then the structure

A 10–15% contingency on a first DIY deck is not panic; it is how you avoid a mid-build hardware-store run at premium prices. If a contractor quote is far below your board-plus-framing check, ask what thickness, grade, or railing system they assumed.
